Negative Commands
Non-Respect
Negative commands have different endings depending on whether the person
gets respect, and whether the verb is weak or strong.
Negative Commands (Non-Respect)
- For weak verbs:
- For two letter roots ending in -அ or -உ: subtract final -அ / -உ
in verb root, then add -ஆதே
- Otherwise: verb root + -ஆதே
- For strong verbs: verb root + க்க் + -ஆதே
Ex:

கத்தாதே
= “Don’t yell.”
- நீங்கள்
பாடாதீர்கள்
= “You don’t sing.”
- தங்கை, பேசாதே = “Little sister, don’t talk.”
Respect

- For weak verbs:
- For two letter roots ending in -அ or -உ: subtract final -அ / -உ
in verb root, then add -ஆதீர்கள்
- Otherwise: verb root + -ஆதீர்கள்
- For strong verbs: verb root + க்க் + -ஆதீர்கள்
Ex:
- நீங்கள்
அடிக்காதே
= “Don’t hit.”

= “Don’t kick.”
- குடிக்காதே = “Don’t drink.”
